Calculate How Much Fondant You Need
Achieving a flawless, smooth finish on a cake starts with rolling out the right amount of fondant. Roll it too thin, and it tears; roll it too thick, and you waste expensive ingredients. Our Fondant Quantities Chart and calculator takes the guesswork out of decorating. Simply enter your cake's diameter and height, and we'll tell you exactly how many ounces or grams of fondant you need to cover it perfectly, including a buffer for trimming.
How to Use
- Measure accurately: Measure the Diameter (across the top) and Height of your cake after you have applied the ganache or buttercream crumb coat.
- Select Shape: Choose Round vs Square (Square cakes require approximately 20% more fondant due to corners).
- Enter Details: Input your dimensions into the Fondant Calculator.
- Weigh & Roll: Weigh out the recommended amount. Knead until pliable, then roll to 1/8 inch thickness.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should I roll my fondant?▼
Standard industry practice is 1/8 inch (approx 3mm). This provides enough stability to lift and drape without tearing, but isn't so thick that it overpowers the cake's flavor. The calculation above assumes this thickness.
Does this include pieces for decoration?▼
No, this calculates the amount strictly for covering the cake. If you plan to make fondant figures, bows, or ruffles, you should add an extra 0.5 - 1 lb (250-500g) of fondant to your total.
Why is the amount higher than other charts?▼
We include a "Buffer Zone" (trimming allowance) in the math. You physically need a larger circle of fondant than the cake's surface area to be able to smooth the sides down without pleats. You will cut off the excess at the bottom.
